Żurawie Gdańsk – architecture rooted in history, designed for the contemporary city

Żurawie is a development that demonstrates how thoughtful design can combine industrial heritage with a contemporary approach to residential space. Conceived as part of a dynamically evolving urban fabric, the project was envisioned from the beginning as something more than just another residential complex.

The development was delivered by YIT Development, with Mota-Engil Polska.

Nordic sensitivity to material and detail

The architectural concept was developed by Prof. Rainer Mahlamäki, a renowned Finnish architect known for projects that combine expressive form with a deep respect for history and context. He invited architect Dariusz Brzeziński and the team from LATERGRUPA ARCHITEKCI, as well as architect Piotr Chwazik and the team from GCK, to collaborate on the project.

The industrial rhythm of the volumes, hand-formed brick tiles and carefully considered building proportions create a contemporary interpretation of the area’s industrial heritage.

It is a project in which aesthetics are not decoration, but the natural outcome of a well-considered architectural idea.

The role of Lumon glazing in the project

In the Żurawie project, Lumon balcony glazing systems were used as an integral element of the buildings’ architecture.

The scope of the installation included:

  • 72 balconies,
  • 328 linear metres of systems,
  • over 413 m² of glazed surface,
  • 465 panes of tempered glass.

In projects of this scale, it is essential to combine architectural aesthetics, installation repeatability and long-term performance. Lumon systems:

  • emphasize the rhythm of the façade,
  • protect balconies from wind and rain,
  • increase the functionality of outdoor space,
  • support the durability of façades and finishing elements.

For the developer, this means a solution that not only looks good on the day the project is delivered, but also maintains a high level of usability and quality for years to come.

More room for life

From the resident’s perspective, the balcony is no longer just an extra feature. It becomes an extension of the apartment – a space that can adapt to changing needs.

Balcony glazing allows it to be used for most of the year, making it possible to arrange furniture, lighting or greenery without worrying about weather conditions. At the same time, it creates an additional, flexible living space.

In modern residential construction, it is precisely the flexibility of space that increasingly determines a development’s competitive advantage on the market.

Responsible architecture designed to last

Żurawie is an example of a project where architecture does not compete with its surroundings but enters into a dialogue with them. In a similar way, we see the role of technical solutions – not as an addition, but as an element that supports the overall quality of the project.

For Lumon, being part of such developments means more than simply supplying a system. It is about co-creating an investment in which:

  • design,
  • functionality,
  • durability,
  • and user comfort

form a single, coherent whole.

  • Creating more functional urban homes with balcony glazing in Wrocław

Modern architecture, functional solutions, and resident comfort are values that increasingly define contemporary residential developments. One example of this approach is the Armii Krajowej 7 project developed by i2 Development in Wrocław, Poland, where Lumon balcony glazing systems were installed. Designed by Chamielec Architekci, the project harmoniously combines modern aesthetics with the functionality of urban living.
