Sterntalerweg Lübeck

From renovation project to flagship development

The revitalization of a residential high-rise in the Moisling district of Lübeck shows how existing buildings can be made attractive and economically viable again through targeted interventions. At the core: new loggias with balcony glazing that significantly improve living quality, energy efficiency, and usability.

Project overview

  • Location: Lübeck-Moisling in Germany
  • Building type: Residential high-rise (1968)
  • Scope: Renovation, vertical extension, new loggias
  • Client: Grundstücks-Gesellschaft TRAVE mbH
  • Architecture: ppp architekten + stadtplaner
  • Construction period: 06/2021 – 04/2025

Initial situation

High heat loss, low living comfort, and barely usable balconies — typical challenges for many buildings from this era.

After the comprehensive renovation, the building almost seems to shine. The old, cramped balconies have been replaced by spacious loggias with Lumon’s retractable/sliding glazing.

Solution

  • 152 full-height retractable/sliding glazing systems
  • Split loggias: glazed + open sections
  • Flexible, year-round use
  • Result: balconies transformed into usable living space

Impact

  • Improved living comfort: weather-protected, usable for longer periods
  • Better energy efficiency: reduced heat loss
  • Value preservation: protection of the building structure and lower maintenance needs

One example of this approach is the Armii Krajowej 7 project developed by i2 Development in Wrocław, Poland, where Lumon balcony glazing systems were installed. Designed by Chamielec Architekci, the project harmoniously combines modern aesthetics with the functionality of urban living.
