Owning a Lumon 3-Season Sunroom: Common Maintenance Tips for Longevity

Owning a 3-season sunroom often comes with more responsibilities than new owners often expect when they start their sunroom journey. Nearly everyone knows it takes purposeful effort and some non-trivial upkeep to maintain a sunroom. Retractable sunrooms are beautiful and timeless additions to any home, offering a bright, inviting space to enjoy the outdoors without dealing with all the elements.

However, like any part of a home, sunrooms can require maintenance to remain functional and beautiful.

Top 4 common Lumon sunroom maintenance issues and how to fix them.

1) Lumon Glazing Retractable Panel Comes Out of the Track

Issue: What should you do if your glass panel tips forward from the upper track, making it seem like it’s falling out?

Solution: Don’t panic! Your panel will not fall out. The lower hinge in the bottom track keeps the panel secure even. If your panel is tipping forward, simply push it upward and re-engage the wheel in the upper track. You can see how this works in the video below.

To prevent this from happening in the future, apply slight upward pressure when retracting the panels and operating the system.

2) Loose handle cables in glazing system

Issue: What happens if the handle cables become loose or the string doesn’t tighten when closing the panel?

Solution: Sometimes, the upper latch might not engage when closing the panel. To fix this, apply outward pressure to the glass panel behind the cable, which should cause the upper latch to click in and tighten the string. The issue may arise due to the settling of the buildings, especially those made of timber, which can shift slightly over time.

3) Lumon Glazing Panel Catches on the Lower Track

Issue: Is your panel catching or scraping along the lower track, preventing smooth operation?

Solution: The settling of the buildings or backyard deck can sometimes cause this imbalance. When buildings are constructed out of wood, they settle, therefore shifting the glass and other materials. Another cause can be sudden hot and cold weather fluctuations. This causes the glass to expand and contract again, moving and causing this slight imbalance. Try lifting the panel slightly to clear the bottom profile as you open and close the panels. If this issue persists or worsens, a call for service may be necessary for an adjustment of the system.

4) Lumon Glazing Sliding System Detaches

Issue: What should you do if the sliding system detaches from the rest of the panels and stops retracting?

Solution: When this happens, the panels may need to be removed and reset onto the track system. We recommend that you contact your local service department. If you have the confidence and technical abilities, we could walk you through how to fix them independently. To mitigate this issue, when sliding, pull until the panel connects or makes contact with the next one on the track before continuing the motion.

While Lumon systems are robust and durable, just like any part of a home, they require a little bit of love from time to time. Understanding these common issues and their solutions ensures your sunroom remains a beautiful and functional part of your home.
