The Story Behind the Lumon Brand
Lumon Group
Our story begins in 1978, in an old chicken coop. Lumon was first known as Pohjois-Karjalan Lasipalvelu Ky, operating out of Outokumpu, Finland. The cackling and clucking of hens was eventually replaced by the sounds of construction, but business didn’t get off to a great start. In 1981, the company headed south to Kymenlaakso, hoping for a better future.
The company changed its name to Ikkunanikkarit Ky and quickly became the region’s most significant window renovator for single-family houses and apartment buildings. The end of the 1980s introduced an overheated construction industry and subsequent recession, resulting in a new and unique concept coming to life in 1990: balcony glazing! This new development meant homeowners could switch between enjoying open, airy outdoor spaces to cosy, enclosed, protected balconies—all thanks to its adjustable glass.
Lumon’s balcony glazing quickly became a concept that gave new life to building balconies. Glazing meant that balconies were no longer unused cold spaces that collected leaves and snow in the autumn and winter, and housed birds in the spring. Instead, it offered an extension of patio season beyond the core warm months of the year and into early spring to late autumn.
Lumon Canada
Starting a company, especially one that manufactures and sells custom-built products, is far from easy. As Lumon Group expanded its operations outside Scandinavia, it set its sights on international markets, including Canada. Lumon Canada was founded in 2011 and began its journey in a small warehouse in Cookstown, Ontario, with just two people running the show.
Today, Lumon Canada operates from two core offices: Woodbridge, Ontario, serving the Greater Toronto Area, and Langley, British Columbia, serving the Greater Vancouver Area. From both locations, we work directly with homeowners to help bring their vision of a more functional outdoor space to life. We also collaborate with architects and developers to incorporate Lumon solutions into residential projects from the very beginning.
Our team has grown to more than 60 members across Canada. Lumon’s Woodbridge office is also home to our state-of-the-art production facility, where every product is manufactured in-house. Lumon has a robust network of dealers across Canada who sell and install Lumon products in communities from coast to coast.
