General Q&A

Can you tan through glass walls?
The tempered glass allows some of the sun’s UV rays to pass through, so it is quite possible to sunbathe with the glasses closed! See the UV protection
How much does the glazing protect against UV rays?
The UV transmission of our tempered glass depends on the thickness and colour of the glass:
Clear glass
6 mm = 57%
8 mm = 52%
10 mm = 49%
12 mm = 46%
Gray glass
6 mm = 18%
8mm = 12%
Can patterns, lines or marks appear on the surface of the glasses?
Some glass manufacturing processes, such as tempering, can create patterns on the glass that become visible if the glass fogs up. Fogging is a normal and natural phenomenon. The same phenomenon can occur in car windows. Traces or patterns can be seen from 2 meters away under normal lighting conditions.
How can I get rid of fog that forms on the glass panes?
A glazing consists of single panes of glass, which tend to fog more when warm, moist air hits the cold glass pane directly. If the glass is very cold and you open the door from the apartment, the glass fogs up on the inside. A facade is never completely sealed, and especially in older houses, both moisture and heat leak out, which is captured by the glazing. It is for this reason that a glazing should never be completely sealed, but a ventilated space so that the facade is not damaged by moisture. If you have glazing from us, you don’t have to worry about it being too tight because our glazing is always installed with regard to the facade and in accordance with the best practices However, our glazing also fogs up when it’s cold outside and warm, moist air hits the glass. The phenomenon of fogging on the inside of the glass is also common in, for example, cars. In exactly the same way that you start the fan in the car and turn on the heat to remove the fog on the glass, you can add a heat source or heating fan on the balcony or patio if you want to avoid fogging up on your glazing.
Can any silicone spray be used to lubricate wheel bases, plastic parts and profiles?
Normal silicone sprays and oils can be used for lubrication. We recommend first cleaning the profiles and parts and lubricating the system once or twice a year so that the glasses move smoothly. The spray should be sprayed sparingly. Do not use other lubricants or greases such as petroleum jelly or oils. They often attract dirt, which can damage the wheels of the system. If for some reason the glasses do not move smoothly, contact our service department

Why do you hear noises and rattles from the glazing?
The rattling of the balcony or terrace glazing is caused by the expansion of the aluminum profiles when they react to temperature changes. Possible expansion has been taken into account in the design of the glazing and its fixings, and frostbite does not affect the safety of the balcony, terrace or the operation of the glazing.
However, if you find the noise too loud, please contact us.
What are your glazings made of?
Our sliding and retractable glazing systems are made of glass that has been tempered for strength and durability, which is then mounted on aluminum beads, profiles and tracks. Tempered glass is 4-6 times stronger than normal float glass, and if the glass happens to break (which is extremely rare), it will break safely into small rounded pieces.
How much warmer will it be on the balcony or terrace with a frameless glazing system?
A glazing system works as a buffer between the balcony and the outside, but also as a buffer between your home and the outside. When it’s cold and windy, your glazing shuts out the cold winds and reduces air pressure. The glazing also captures the heat that leaks out of your home. Therefore, the temperature on the balcony will be slightly higher than the temperature outside.
Remember that a glazed balcony or terrace is still a ventilated space. During the colder months, we recommend that you supplement the balcony with a terrace heater for some extra heat.

How tight is the glazed balcony? Is a balcony glazing completely sealed?
A Lumon balcony glazing system protects the balcony specifically from wind and storms. The system is not completely sealed, as the balcony also needs ventilation but provides sufficient protection against rain and dirt, which means that you don’t have to wipe your furniture and interior so often.
Read more below in the ventilation

In rainy and windy weather conditions, small amounts of water can enter the balcony or terrace. Keep in mind that the balcony is still a semi-outdoor space, even if the glazing provides very good protection.
How should a glazed balcony be ventilated? Does the glazed terrace need to be ventilated?
1-3 mm wide openings between the glass-panes are sufficient for ventilation of the balcony. Even between the roof and the upper profile, a gap can sometimes appear. This is due to height differences in the ceiling.
If you want more effective ventilation, you can open the first glass to the ventilation position.
Note! The balcony must not be sealed too much. Proper ventilation ensures that structures dry out and remain in good condition. If you want to reduce the opening in question, order transparent PVC seals from your Lumon office or online store.

A glazed balcony is a ventilated space because concrete and construction need to be aired in order not to become damp and spoil. With good ventilation, the structures dry out and remain in good condition.

The gaps between the glasses are 1-3 mm so that the balcony or patio can have good ventilation.

NOTE! Do not leave children or pets on the balcony without supervision, with the glazing in the ventilation position. Due to the risk of falling, the glazing is child and pet safe only when completely closed.
What sounds or rattles do you hear from the balcony glasses?
Balcony glazing reacts to temperature changes like any other aluminum or glass product. The possible frosting of the glazing is due to the expansion of the aluminum profiles when they react to temperature changes. This possible expansion has been taken into account in the design of the system and its attachments. Crashing does not affect safety or operation.
Is it dangerous if the glass pane is bent?
Tempered glass is flexible and can therefore bend slightly. In the normal case, a deflection of 3 mm/m is allowed, but on a very windy day, the glass panes can bend slightly more. Due to the flexibility of tempered glass, this type of glass can withstand impacts better than normal glass.
Why frameless?
Frameless balcony glazing makes your balcony feel more spacious and airy. You can also enjoy a panoramic view of your surroundings without any frames or vertical profiles obscuring the view.
In addition, the facade gets a stylish look that does not change the style of the building significantly. At the same time, space is left for architects and developers to create new unique facades, as the glass can be obtained in different colors and textures.

However, the glass terrace substantially reduces the amount of dust, wind and snow that enters the terrace. When broken, tempered glass shatters into small, blunt-ended chips that do not pose a serious risk of injury.

Lumon terrace glazing is better understood as three season rooms rather than four season sunrooms. Unlike a four season sunroom, which is typically just a regular insulated room with standard double paned windows, our glass walls can slide open and retract fully for maximum flexibility.
Lumon terrace glazing is not intended to be a thermal space like indoor rooms but rather a protected outdoor space that enhances the comfort and usability of your patio while maintaining that essential outdoor flavour.

Can I use the retractable terrace glazing system as the exterior wall of my home?
Unfortunately not. Our glazing systems are single glazed, tempered panels with 2-3mm gaps between the glass to allow for adequate ventilation of your outdoor living space. They are not thermally rated to act as an interior-exterior barrier.
Can I use the terrace glazing system as an interior wall inside my home?
Yes, we have done many interior applications.
Do you have covers or roofs that retract?

Yes, every type of terrace glazing can be equipped with a locking mechanism.
How do I clean my Lumon glass roof or patio cover? Can I use a pressure washer on the roof?
We do not recommend the use of a pressure washer on your glass roof, as it can damage the rubber seals that hold your roof panels in place. It’s best not to use a pressure washer on your glass walls either.

For both the glass roof and the glazing systems, we recommend using mild household cleaning products or soapy water on the surface. Cleaning glass with a long-handled squeegee will give you the best results.
